"SALT Villa was inspired by rustic island living. Our aim was to create a space that blended in with its surroundings and maintained soft, subtle aesthetics. We worked with local builders and used materials that were natural or available on Rote. Meaning we could support the local community every step of the way with its creation.
It’s the perfect place to reconnect. To self, to nature and to the slowness of life."

Some homes hold a feeling the moment you step inside them.
Warm light, soft textures, salty air drifting through open spaces – the kind of place that instantly slows you down. Salt Villa was designed by Bonnie, who splits her time with her family between Rote Island, Indonesia, and Byron Bay, Australia. Inspired by relaxed island living, the villa was created as a reflection of slow mornings, natural textures, coastal warmth and the feeling of escape.
How would you describe the overall aesthetic of the villa?
Relaxed coastal living with a tropical warmth to it. Everything was designed to feel soft, natural and welcoming – from the thatched roof and timber textures through to the linens and layered cushions. I wanted guests to walk in and immediately exhale.

What drew you to the Escape to Paradise pieces when styling the space?
The colours and textures worked so naturally within the villa. I loved that the cushions added warmth and softness without overpowering the space. They feel relaxed but still elevated, which is exactly the balance I was looking for throughout the interiors.
The pieces helped bring that final lived-in layer to the villa.

What does “escape” mean to you personally?
Creating a life and home that feels slow, intentional and connected. I think escape doesn’t always have to mean travel – sometimes it’s simply creating spaces around you that make you feel calm, inspired and present.
That’s what I wanted Salt Villa to feel like.

Styled with a collection of Escape to Paradise cushions and layered textiles, we sat down with Bonnie to talk about the inspiration behind Salt Villa, the process of creating the space, and the pieces that helped bring it all together
