The Mentawi Islands is a remote chain of about 70 islands and islets off the western coast of Sumatra, on the Indonesian coastline. The main islands are Siberut, Sipura, North Pagai, and South Pagai.
This place is remembered for its most consistent and perfect surf breaks, and a place we constantly dream about with its crystal clear blue inlets and deep green rainforest dwelling areas, perfect for jungle trekking.
As a home of large powerful waves in the key months of April to September presents iconic waves providing an ideal area for great surf. The off season from October to May are a vision of smaller waves, and also smaller crowds.
In terms of culture, the islands are home to the Mentawi tribe which is one of Indonesia's oldest indigenous groups, known for their traditional forest-dwelling lifestyle, and distinct body tattooing.
As a secluded area, boats only travel to the mentawi islands a few times a week therefore careful planning needs to be undertaken for travel. Though when you get there it is absolute paradise...
